Divine Judgment, Punishment & Intervention
The day of the Lord is a time of divine judgment, punishment and intervention when God will cleanse the world of sin and demonstrate His sovereignty over all people and nations.
The day that is coming will burn like a furnace, all the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, it will set them on fire.
But for those who revere His name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays.
And they will go out and frolic like well-fed calves, then trample on the wicked who will be ashes under their feet. (Malachi 4:1-3)
The day of the Lord is a day of reckoning, restitution, reclamation, remembrance, repentance and restoration, and God is resolute in His word.
God Saves His People
God will save His people on that day as a shepherd saves His flock.
They will sparkle in His land like jewels in a crown. (Zechariah 9:16)
The LORD Almighty will restore the tribes of Jacob and also the Gentiles, that His salvation may reach to the ends of the earth. (Isaiah 49:6)
Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Acts 2:21)
The day of the LORD is a great and dreadful day (Malachi 5:5), the wicked will be removed and the righteous will be gathered.
The Day & Hour Unknown
The day of the LORD is near for all nations.
As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head. (Obadiah 1:15)
About that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. (Matthew 24:36)
It will come like a thief in the night.
While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labour pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. (1 Thessalonians 5:2-3)
Darkness, Gloom & Pain
The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. (Acts 2:20)
The day of the LORD is a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness. (Joel 2:2)
The stars of heaven and their constellations will not show their light.
The rising sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light. (Isaiah 13:10)
It will be a day of disease and incurable pain. (Isaiah 17:11)
God Will Destroy The Sinners
For the LORD has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion. (Isaiah 34:8)
The heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. (2 Peter 3:10)
It is a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger - to make the land desolate and destroy the sinners within it. (Isaiah 13:9)
God will punish the world for its evil, the wicked for their sins. He will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless. (Isaiah 13:9-11)
In the evening, sudden terror! Before the morning, they are gone! This is the portion of those who loot us, the lot of those who plunder us. (Isaiah 17:12-14)
Arrogance & Human Pride Humbled
The LORD Almighty has a day in store for all the proud and lofty, for all that is exalted, for all the towering mountains and all the high hills, for every lofty tower and every fortified wall, for every trading ship and every stately vessel.
The arrogance of man will be brought low and human pride humbled; the LORD alone will be exalted in that day, and the idols will totally disappear.
People will flee to caves in the rocks and to holes in the ground from the fearful presence of the LORD and the splendour of His majesty, when He rises to shake the earth.
In that day people will throw away their idols of silver and gold, which they made to worship.
Stop trusting in mere humans, who have but a breath in their nostrils. Why hold them in esteem? (Isaiah 2:12-22)
The Wicked Perish
The wicked disregard God's commandments, prioritising worldly desires and selfish pursuits with little regard for others.
Pursuit of wealth, power or pleasure that is not rooted in God is unstable and the way of the wicked leads to destruction. (Psalm 1:6)
The wicked perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
The LORD's enemies will be separated from God and will be consumed, they will go up in smoke; (Psalm 37:20)
The Light of Israel will become a fire, their Holy One a flame; in a single day it will burn and consume His thorns and briers. (Isaiah 10:17)
Sound The Alarm
God tells us to blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on His holy hill.
Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of the LORD is coming.
It is close at hand - a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness.
Like dawn spreading across the mountains a large and mighty army (of locusts) comes, such as never was in ancient times nor ever will be in ages to come.
Before them fire devours, behind them a flame blazes. (Joel 2:1-3)
The LORD's Mighty Army
Before them the land is like the garden of Eden, behind them, a desert waste - nothing escapes them.
They have the appearance of horses; they gallop along like cavalry.
With a noise like that of chariots they leap over the mountaintops, like a crackling fire consuming stubble, like a mighty army drawn up for battle.
At the sight of them, nations are in anguish; every face turns pale.
They charge like warriors; they scale walls like soldiers. (Joel 2:3-7)
The LORD Thunders
They all march in line, not swerving from their course.
They do not jostle each other; each marches straight ahead. They plug through defences without breaking ranks.
They rush upon the city; they run along the wall. They climb into the houses; like thieves they enter through the windows.
Before them the earth shakes, the heavens tremble, the sun and moon are darkened, and the stars no longer shine.
The LORD thunders as the head of His army; His forces are beyond number, and mighty is the army that obeys His command. (Joel 2:7-11)
The Distinction Between The Righteous & The Wicked
A scroll of remembrance was written in the LORD's presence concerning those who feared Him and honoured His name.
On the day when He acts, they will be His treasured possession.
The LORD will spare them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son who serves him.
And they will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not. (Malachi 3:16-18)
Let us seek righteousness over wickedness, let us trade truth for lies and let us strive to become the LORD's treasured possession when the clarion call comes.
Songs of Praise
In that day, we will praise God, for although He was angry, His anger has turned away and He will comfort us.
We will say that surely God is our salvation; we will trust and not be afraid.
The LORD Himself is our strength and our defence; He has become our salvation.
With joy we will draw water from the wells of salvation.
In that day we will give praise to the LORD, make known among the nations what He has done and proclaim that His name is exalted. (Isaiah 12:1-4)
The Joy of The Redeemed
The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom.
Like the crocus, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.
The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendour of Carmel and Sharon; they will see the glory of the LORD, the splendour of our God.
Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; say to those with fearful hearts, "Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, He will come with vengeance; with divine retribution He will come to save you."
Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped, then will the lame leap like a deer and the mute tongue shout for joy. (Isaiah 35:1-6)
A Highway For The Holy
The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs. In the haunts where jackals once lay, grass and reeds and papyrus will grow.
And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness; it will be for those who walk on that Way.
The unclean will not journey on it; wicked fools will not go about on it. No lion will be there, nor any ravenous beast; they will not be found there.
They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads.
Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away. (Isaiah 35:7-10)
The Veil Lifted
Satan and his wicked ways will be uprooted and his influence removed.
The veil that people have been unable to see through will finally be lifted and taken away and the LORD will swallow up death forever.
The Sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears from all faces; He will remove His people's disgrace from all the earth. (Isaiah 25:7-8)
In perfect faithfulness God will do wonderful things, things planned long ago.
Let us exalt Him and praise His name. (Isaiah 25:1)
The Glory of God
As we are scooped up in God's mighty's arms, we will once again come to know Him, in all His glory.
No longer hidden, He will walk amongst us and we will rest in His divine presence.
Let us not be afraid.
Rather, let us revere His mighty name, drawing every closer and sharing the good news with all those who seek to know more.
In deep gratitude, we thank God for His mercy, His mighty Hand and His majesty.
