Why a day of rest is so important...
I recently started the practice of one day a week dedicated to God.
Since doing this, a great peace has come upon me, both physically and emotionally.
A day of rest is so much more than a day of relaxation, it’s also rest for our Soul.
Deep rest comes as we get to know God and His ways are revealed to us.
A day of rest also allows us to experience a deep slowing down and a greater appreciation and enjoyment of each moment.
The bible verses that encouraged me to begin this practice is Isaiah 58:13-14.
“If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the Lord’s holy day honorable, and if you honour it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, then you will find your joy in the Lord, and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob.”
The Sabbath is so much more than a day of rest, it is a day to delight in the Lord and to honour him.
It is a time to draw closer and to lean into, hear and understand God's promises, will and way.
It is a holy day, to exhort the Lord in all his Glory and to recognise all that He has done and will continue to do for us.
The inheritance of Jacob is the blessing that was bestowed upon Jacob by his father Isaac, as follows:
"May God give you heaven's dew and earth's richness - an abundance of grain and new wine.
May nations serve you and peoples bow down to you.
Be lord over your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.
May those who curse you be cursed and those who bless you be blessed."
May we come to see, understand and respect the ways of the Lord and may we walk in them with gladness.
May we honour His Sabbath and rest in His peace, glory and eternal goodness.
May we delight in His Word and find joy in Him.
May we ride in triumph on the heights of the land and may we feast on the inheritance of our father Jacob.
